Our first International Conference on Bio-based Polymers and Composites (BiPoCo) was organized in 2012 by the joint effort of the participants of three European projects, Biostruct, Forbioplast and Woody, focusing on the characterization, modification and application of biopolymers. The success of the conference initiated the organization of BiPoCo 2014 in Visegrád, and the scope of the previous BiPoCo meeting was extended with topics on smart, nano-structured systems for controlled molecular release and biological interfaces. The positive feedback of the more than 200 participants of BiPoCo 2014 encouraged us to organize the conference for the third time in 2016.
 
The topics selected for the conference are as follows:

Renewable building blocks, natural polymers, biopolymers and their composites

  • Raw materials based on natural resources (triglycerides, lignin, flavonoids, etc.); their modification and application for the synthesis of biopolymers.
  • Natural polymers and their derivatives (polysaccharides, cellulose, proteins, etc.); modification, functionalization and plasticization.
  • Bio-based and biodegradable polymers (polyesters, polyhydroxyalkanoates, polyamides, polyolefins, etc.) as well as their blends.
  • Natural fiber reinforcement (WPC, nanocellulose, etc.) and composites with biopolymer matrices; surface modification, coupling, deformation and failure mechanism.

Biomaterials for life science

  • Stimuli-responsive polymers, hydrogels; colloids and nano-sized assemblies, microparticles, capsules, hybrid gels and biological interfaces: thin films, polymer brushes and membranes.
  • Controlled drug delivery via various administration routes (oral, nasal, ocular, transdermal, etc.); bioadhesive formulations; polymer nanoparticles for targeted drug and gene delivery; injectable soft materials, implants.
  • Scaffold fabrication, mechanics of scaffolds, surface properties, modification of scaffolds with bioactive ligands, cell-scaffold interactions, degradation.

Processing, application, environmental aspects

  • Development and optimization of processing technologies for biopolymers.
  • Application of biopolymers; packaging, cosmetics, agriculture, horticulture, thin films and coatings, automotive and electronic industry, sensors and optical devices, waste water treatment, superabsorbents, etc.
  • Degradation, biodegradation, biodeterioration and composting; enzymatic modification; environmental impact, life cycle analysis and certification.
